Calliope Stage Company is seeking a small, dynamic ensemble of actor-storytellers for The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, directed by Ashlee Wasmund and produced by Producing Artistic Director Tim Becze.
This production is an ensemble-driven, actor-centered theatrical experience that relies on imagination, transformation, and collaborative storytelling. Actors will play multiple roles and help bring Edward’s journey to life through physicality, voice, and connection.
All roles receive an actor stipend.

Edward Tulane is an expensive toy rabbit made of china. He is loved deeply by a little girl named Abilene—but Edward does not love in return. Vain and self-centered, he cares only for himself.
When Edward is lost overboard on an ocean voyage, he begins an unexpected journey across years and landscapes, encountering a wide range of people—each offering him glimpses of love, loss, and connection.
Through this miraculous journey, Edward learns what it means to love, what it means to lose that love, and how to find the courage to love again.
Based on the novel by Kate DiCamillo, this play is a theatrical tour de force for a small ensemble of actors and musicians.

We aim to create a supportive, low-pressure environment where you can do your best work. Here’s what the process will look like:
Check-In: When you arrive, you’ll sign in and we’ll confirm receipt of your audition form. Please aim to arrive a few minutes early for this check-in process.
Preparation Time: You’ll likely have a few minutes to relax before going into the audition area. This is a great time to do a final look at your side/audition material.
In the Room: You’ll perform your audition for the Director and Artistic Director. We’re rooting for you! We may ask you some questions about yourself or your experience as well.
Reading Sides: You may be asked to read additional sides from the script with a reader. Focus on listening and responding—perfection isn’t the goal.
Adjustments: We may give you a quick note or ask you to try something a different way. This is a good thing! It helps us see how you take direction.
Timing: Most auditions last just a few minutes. We’ll keep things moving so everyone has a chance to be seen.
Most importantly: We’re excited to meet you and see your work. Come as you are, be prepared, and don’t worry about being perfect—we’re looking for connection, creativity, and potential.

Sides
“Sides” are short excerpts from the script that you will be asked to prepare and read during the audition. These help us see how you approach the language, character, and relationships in the play. Sides will be provided in advance; this gives you an opportunity to get comfortable with the language, although memorization isn’t necessary. Use your preparation time to think about the character, what they want in the scene, and their relationship to the other characters onstage. We recommend bringing a printed copy to your audition.Reader
A “reader” is someone in the room (often a member of the production team) who will read the other character(s) in the scene with you. They will remain seated at the front of the audition room next to the Director. Their role is simply to support you—they are not being evaluated—so you can focus on your performance and connection to the scene. They will match your energy and follow your lead with the scene.
